HISTORY OF MACCABI IN AUSTRALIA


1880s

    Organised sport for Australian Jews was being played in New South Wales, Victoria and
    Western Australia

 
1912

    Six Jewish sporting organisations were established in Sydney

 
1922

    The Judean League of Victoria was formed

 
1924 (May)

    The Sydney Judaean Amateur Athletic Association (SJAA) wrote to Rabbi Israel Brodie in Melbourne
    asking if there was any interest in an interstate cricket match.  The Judaean league of Victoria replied
    and the result was a cricket match between the two states in Melbourne in December 1924

1925

    Beginning of annual sporting carnivals. The first was held in Sydney between New South Wales
    and Victoria in 4 sports for men : cricket, athletics, swimming and tennis


1926

    Western Australia competed for the first time
 
1928-1929

    Women competed at the Melbourne Carnival for the first time
1934-1935
    After the 9th carnival in Melbourne the Australian Judaean Sports Council (AJSC) was
    established to control Jewish sport in Australia and be responsible for the annual carnivals
 
1950

    Australia first competed at the 3rd Maccabiah Games in Israel with one tennis player, Elias
    Honig
1957
    It was decided that the seat of office of the Council would alternate on a 3 year basis between
    Melbourne and Sydney.  The late Basil Isaacs became the first President
 
1960 (Jan)

    The name of the organisation was changed to Australian Maccabi Council
 
1974 (April)

    The name of the organisation changed again to Australian Maccabi Federation
 
1982

    The first Junior Carnival for 11-16 year olds was held in Sydney
 
1991 (Jan)

    The name was changed to Maccabi Australia Inc
 
1991

    Australia competed at the Pan American Maccabi Games for the first time
 
1997

    Collapse of the bridge over the Yarkon River at the opening Ceremony of the Maccabiah
    Games resulted in death and injury to a number of Australian competitors
2004
    The Maccabi Australia constitution was changed; MAI is now controlled by a team of
    commissioners.  The commissioners are responsible for 3 committees - National Sport,
    International Sport and a Development Commission to focus on leadership training
 
2004

    The first Maccabi Australia Games (MAGS) was held in Canberra
 
2006 (July)

    The first MAIGS (International) was held in Sydney with a large number of overseas
    countries competing
2007

2008

    A Board of Governors was formed under the Chairmanship of Barry Smorgon 

    Establishment of  a Grievance Committee to deal with the appeals process
Today
    Maccabi Australia has 5 affiliated state bodies: New South Wales, Victoria, Western
    Australia, South Australia and Queensland, with a total membership of well over 6,000
    members.  Maccabi Australia is a member of the Maccabi World Union, the Zionist
    Federation of Australia, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and the Australian Sports
    Foundation
