MACCABIAH GAMES

July was a golden month for Australian Jewish sport.

Our 400-strong team to the 18th Maccabiah enjoyed a record medal-haul, finishing 3rd overall behind hosts Israel and the USA. Competitors, team management and supporters enjoyed a magical festival of sport and friendship wonderfully hosted by Israel. From the inspiring
Opening Ceremony to the Bridge Disaster Memorial, to emerging stars like swimmer Marni Burger, a romantic proposal and then a stirring Closing Ceremony the 18th Maccabiah showcased the best of Israel and the close bond between Jews from around the world.

Most of our Maccabeans have returned to Australia and we wish those travelling the globe a well-earned holiday and a safe trip home.

Our thanks to the incredible leadership and hard work of Head of Delegation Tom Goldman, General Manager Lisa Borowick, the Executive team, Team managers, Medical Personnel, Media team, volunteers and the support of valued sponsors.

MACCABI AUSTRALIA INTERNATIONAL GAMES (MAIGS)
The inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games were held in Sydney, 2006. Maccabi Australia hosted over 700 athletes from around the world at this exciting event, and started a tradition to build upon!

We are extremely lucky in Australia to enjoy the benefits of one of the largest and most dynamic Maccabi Communities.  And Australians enjoy a well-earned international reputation for their love of all sports.

So it was only natural that Australia, with so much to offer and so much enthusiasm about the Maccabi philosophy, would host a sports meet on its own shores, welcoming international Jewish athletes.

In 2010 MAIGS will be hosted by Sydney, New South Wales.  For further information on anything relating to MAIGS 2010, please contact Jeff Houseman, Chairman.

PAN AMERICAN MACCABI GAMES
Australia first sent a delegation of just three athletes to the Venezuelan Pan-American Games in 1991.  At the last games held in Argentina in 2007, 90 Australian athletes and administrators attended.

The games, held every four years, saw more than 4,000 Jewish athletes from all over the world descend on Buenos Aires.  The 10-day event comprised athletes from the Americas, South Africa, Great Britain, Israel, Hungary, Holland and Australia. (See Report for final Medal Count)
